Nancy McCarten

Nancy McCarten age 91 died peacefully in her home on Sunday August 27, 2023. Nancy was born in Glassboro, NJ on February 4, 1932. She was the daughter of Mildred King Sangree and John Brewster Sangree. Her brother John Sangree was a longtime resident of Houston Texas and her sister Abigail Sangree Schearer still lives in the Carlisle area in Pennsylvania. Nancy married George McCarten on January 3, 1959. After throwing blueberries in her ear, Nancy knew George was the one! They loved the water and boating, their first date was at Sweetwater Casino. They raised three children Hannorah, Eileen and Denis. They traveled the world in their retirement. Nancy attended Douglas College, Rutgers University after high school, where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology. After college she joined the Red Cross and became a Counselor and Event Coordinator for troops stationed in various locations in Asia including Japan and the Philippines. She returned home to New Jersey to meet the love of her life and begin her next big adventure as a wife and mother. She continued to be an active part of the community as a special education activist in the local school district and worked part time as a hearing aid consultant. Nancy is survived by her son Denis McCarten of New Gretna, her daughter Eileen McCarten of Leeds Point NJ, granddaughter Moira Sallade and husband Joss Sallade of Richmond, VA as well as her great-grandson Hayes Sallade. Nancy is also survived by her sister Abigail Shearer, many nieces, nephews, their children and grandchildren. Nancy is predeceased by her husband George McCarten, her daughter Hannorah McCarten, her brother John Sangree, sister-in-law Joan Sangree, her brother-in-law William Schearer, parents John and Mildred Sangree, as well as her in-laws, Stan and Lavinia McCarten. Her memory will be honored at St. Theresa’s Church in Little Egg Harbor, NJ. The funeral mass will begin at 11am Saturday September 2, 2023. She will be remembered for her many accomplishments, various social gatherings, and the beautiful family she is leaving as her legacy
