Nancy E. Lauber passed away at her home in Little Egg Harbor, NJ on October 5, 2024. A native of Connecticut, Nancy spent the first half of her life in East Norwalk and Westport. She was a graduate of the Bolton School (now Greens Farms Academy) and Middlebury College.
After college, Nancy returned to her alma mater to teach high school mathematics and coach varsity sports. She became Chair of the Physical Education department in 1960, Chair of the Mathematics department in 1961, and Assistant to the Headmaster in 1963. In 1964, the Board of Trustees named her as Headmistress, a position she held when the school planned and implemented its transition from a girls’ school to a co-educational one in 1970. In 1972, she left to become Principal of the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA. Shipley was on the verge of going co-ed, and the change was one of her primary responsibilities.
In Connecticut, Nancy has been an avid tennis player; while serving as Principal of Shipley, she learned to play golf, a sport she grew to love. After leaving Shipley in 1979, she spent the next two years working on her game, playing courses in the US and Europe. Being of Scottish descent, Nancy included many storied courses of Scotland in her itinerary. When she returned stateside, a group of sponsors had decided to start an LPGA tournament in the area; Nancy was tapped to be the Volunteer Coordinator, which made her responsible for managing over 1000 volunteers. She held this position for 17 years while serving as a member of its Board of Directors. Originally the Atlantic City LPGA Classic, the tournament found sponsorship and was renamed the ShopRite LPGA Classic; it would grow to be the most successful 54-hole event on the LPGA schedule.
In addition to becoming a trained course rater for the US Golf Association (USGA), Nancy served nine years as President of the South Jersey Golf Association, a regional arm of the USGA. She capitalized on her leadership skills to serve as a Trustee of the 525-home adult community where she lived for 12 years. When the developer turned control over to the homebuyers, Nancy became the first resident to serve as President. After a two-year hiatus from the job, Nancy was again elected to the Board and served four more years, two as President.
In her twilight years, Nancy enjoyed the company of her close friends and four-legged companions. She generously supported animal welfare and veterans organizations and followed local and national politics. She was also an accomplished bridge player.
A private memorial service and interment will be in Connecticut at St. Paul’s on the Green in Norwalk. Her ashes will be lovingly placed in eternal rest near her sister, Pat, and her brother-in-law, Pip.
Nancy was an animal lover, especially cats. Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in her name is asked to consider the Popcorn Park Zoo (1 Humane Way, Forked River, NJ), the Humane Society of Atlantic County (1401 Absecon Blvd, Atlantic City), the North Shore Animal League (25 Davis Ave, Port Washington, NY) or the no-kill shelter of choice.
