Lawrence S. (Larry) Weimer, 89, of Tuckerton, NJ passed away on Monday January 8, 2024. Larry was born in Irvington, NJ, where he lived before moving to Tuckerton 24 years ago.
Long enamored with the concept of flying, Larry spent his career close to aircraft. At the rank of Airman Third Class, Larry proudly served our nation in the United States Air Force from 1954-57, initially based with the 9th Supply Squadron of the Strategic Air Command in Idaho and then in Western Europe. After his military service, Larry worked for Eastern Air Lines, advancing through promotions before retiring from the company as their Station Manager at Newark Airport. Subsequently in the 1990s, Larry assisted British Airways in their start-up of operations at Newark Airport and also worked for Kiwi Airlines. Larry’s love of flight extended to his hobbies, such as kiteflying, and images of eagles, which adorned many of his possessions.
Active and physically robust, Larry was always drawn to cars, home repairs and renovations, and the water. He enjoyed crabbing, swimming and snorkeling, and became a credentialed scuba diver. Indeed, it was while working in high school as a lifeguard at the swimming pool in Irvington’s Olympic Park that Larry met the love of his life, Alice Tindall, whom he married in 1954 and with whom he raised six children, along with a few dogs and the occasional cat. As a generation of grandchildren emerged, Larry became commonly known in the family as “Pop-Pop” and “Poppy.”
Larry enjoyed traveling, vacationing often in Florida and visiting Mexico, Vancouver, Catalina Island, the Bahamas, and many other places. His trip to the Alamo was especially gratifying to him and reflected his affection for Western imagery, which was apparent in his preferred accoutrements of bolo tie and cowboy hat.
Larry was an active member of his church, first in Irvington at St. Paul the Apostle Church and later at St. Theresa’s in Little Egg Harbor, where he was Head Usher for many years. Late in life he volunteered with AARP helping senior citizens file their taxes, attending meetings of the Old Guard in Toms River, and hitting the slots and buffets of Atlantic City.
Larry was predeceased by his parents Lawrence C. and Marie Weimer and his beloved wife Alice.
He is survived by his sister Betty Frisco of Longs, SC, loving children Lawrence D. Weimer and wife Alicia of Wharton, Harry Weimer and wife Sandi of Manahawkin, Perri Lynn Morton and husband John of Cincinnati, OH, Timothy Weimer of Hillsborough, Lisa Giunta and husband Tom, and David Weimer and wife Angela of Tuckerton; grandchildren Chris, Carolyn, Melissa, Ryan, Stephen, Brian, Shannon, John Jr., Kelly, Christine, David, Theresa, Thomas, and Belle; and great-grandchildren Emily, Moss, Rebecca, Danielle, Catherine, Aiden, Emma, Noah, Logan, Leo, Alexander, Shea, Drew, Peyton, and Chase.
Viewing Hours will be held on Wednesday January 17 from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm and Thursday January 18 from 9:30am to 10:30am at Maxwell Funeral Home, 160 Mathistown Rd Little Egg Harbor, NJ 08087.
