John Mulholland, aged 88, from Little Egg Harbor, NJ, peacefully passed away on August 12, 2023. Born in Rochester, New York, John spent nearly four decades residing in Chatham, New Jersey, before retiring to Little Egg Harbor almost 20 years ago. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956, embarking on a distinguished career as a sought-after Structural and Civil Engineer. John shared his love of engineering as an adjunct professor for many years at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Remarkably, John remained one of the last surviving members of his graduating class to continue working well beyond the typical retirement age, working into his 80’s.
Furthermore, John was a distinguished member of the Chatham Jaycees and Rotary Club, an influential coach in the Little League, and one of the visionaries behind a highly competitive women's Garden State Summer League softball team that featured all-star athletes from the surrounding area (alongside Coaches Conlan, Filipo and Williams). He also held the esteemed title of Chairman of the Board of Recreation for many years. Although he never personally participated in soccer, he possessed a profound understanding of the sport, coaching youth soccer for six seasons. John spent countless hours at various fields watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events. In summary, John was a true Renaissance Man who achieved success in any endeavor he set his mind to. His kindness and influence continues to be felt across many generations.
John is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janice Walker Mulholland, and his parents, F. John Mulholland and Mildred Baker Mullholand. The love story of Janice and John began with a blind date in Boston in 1958, which swiftly led to their marriage shortly thereafter. John said that while he and his wife were oil and vinegar at times they loved each other very much and had a wonderful life together.
He is survived by his daughter, LeeAnn Hillis, and her husband, Jim, of Little Egg Harbor, NJ; his son, Rick Mulholland, and wife, Desiree, of Roselle Park, NJ; his eldest daughter, Laura Sinopoli, of Lanoka Harbor, NJ; and his grandchildren, J.P. Sinopoli, Casey Sinopoli, and Bella Sinopoli, along with his great-grandson, Greyson Sinopoli.
A Memorial Gathering is scheduled from 11:00 AM to 12:00pm followed by a Memorial Service at 12:00pm, Saturday, September 16 at Maxwell Funeral Home 160 Mathistown Rd. in Little Egg Harbor, NJ 08087.
