Jean M. Koenig, 90, of Cranford and Little Egg Harbor, NJ, passed away on Thursday April 18th, 2024 at The Terraces Assisted Living in Little Egg Harbor. Jean was born in Jersey City, NJ, and spent her young life living in Hoboken. She went on marry and spend over 65 years in Cranford, NJ, before moving to Little Egg Harbor, NJ, in 2021. Jean was a phenomenal home maker and after the graduation of her daughter she went back to college to get her Associate Degree in Gerontology. At the time she was volunteering at Cranford Hall Nursing Home and after graduating they offered her the position of Activities Director; a job she proudly held until her retirement at 80. After retirement Jean went on to volunteer her time at the Cranford Historical Society and the Cranford Library. She spent many hours volunteering throughout her life for various animal shelters and was a lifelong Girl Scout for the Washington Rock Girl Scout Council. Jean ran many Girl Scout Troops, was a cookie coordinator and a Girl Scout trainer to help train new troop leaders. Jean and her husband founded the Cranford Recycling Center in the 1970’s and they enjoyed square dancing all over the world in many different square dancing clubs.
Jean was predeceased by her parents William and May Block, and her husband Eugene Koenig.
She is survived by her loving daughter Sandra Koenig of Little Egg Harbor, NJ, her cousin Joan Lafaire of Somerville, NJ and Joan’s daughters Jacque Livingston-Lafaire and husband Scott of Hillsborough, NJ, and Linda Lafaire of Somerville, NJ.
Visitation will be held on Friday April 26th, 2024 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, with a service beginning at 8:30pm, at Gray Memorial Funeral Home, 12 Springfield Avenue, Cranford, NJ 07016. Cremation will be private and a burial of ashes next to her husband will take place privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor Jean's love of animals by making a donation to your local animal shelter.
