George Porter

George Porter, 80, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, December 15, 2023. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on April 4, 1943. He was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 31 years, Susan Porter, and parents Alvin and Dorothy.

George lived life entirely on his own terms, making friends and enjoying his time exactly as he wanted to.

George honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was qualified as a Flight Engineer on the P2V Neptune and the P-3 Orion. He served in the maritime patrol community (the “VP” Navy), which he loved. George also served aboard the USS Constellation, attached to a Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron in Vietnam. He was promoted up through First Class Petty Officer and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Two Good Conduct Medals, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the National Defense Medal, in addition to various campaign, service, and unit ribbons.

After his military service, George worked as a heavy equipment operator for Local 825 and took great pride in working with his hands both professionally and in his personal hobbies. Some of his favorite pastimes included working on engines, home improvement projects, landscaping with his skid steer, bird watching, and spending time with family. He especially loved to watch a football game on TV, settled into his favorite chair with a fire in the fireplace.

George had a deep love of animals and cared for many cherished pets over the years who brought him great joy. He loved socializing with friends and family, especially sharing laughs and stories over a drink at Motts Creek Inn, Lower Bank Tavern, and the Red Men.

Family was always most important to George. He leaves behind seven beloved children: daughter Jacqueline Kaari of Hudson, OH, son Steven Porter and wife Karen of Toms River, NJ, daughter Mari Considine and husband Michael of Woolwich, NJ, daughter Amanda Mulligan and husband James of Little Egg Harbor, NJ, daughter Alison Porter of Little Egg Harbor, NJ, son Donald Mathis and wife Jennifer of Montclair, NJ, daughter Kimberly Andersson and husband Mikael of Wiscasset, ME; and ten grandchildren: Jennifer, Jessica, Rachel, Sophia, Max, Mazzy, Daniel, Katie, David, and Linnea. They will miss his warm smile and unwavering care and support.

George will be remembered for his kind heart, playful good humor, and loving nature that made each person feel special. He touched many lives over his 80 years. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

Cremation will be private. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday December 20, 2023 from 4-6pm at Maxwell Funeral Home 160 Mathistown Road Little Egg Harbor, NJ 08087. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Legion or the World Wildlife Fund.
