It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Acker, a man who touched the lives of so many. He was a devout Christian who lived a life of service, dedicating himself to his faith, his family, and his community.
Gary was born in Newark, NJ on March 3rd, 1953 to John and Alice Zabriskie Acker. He is survived by his wife Nancy, his children Ryan (wife Candace) Acker & Stacey Acker, his stepson Christopher, his grandson Jeremiah Acker, his sister Jaclyn Warren, his brother Bob Acker, and his younger sister Laurie Grafeld.
From a young age, Gary demonstrated a strong work ethic, which he carried with him throughout his life. He was known for his dedication to his family, and his love and devotion to his first wife, Karen Acker, who passed at the age of 54, and his current wife, Nancy Acker. Gary was a loving father and stepfather to his children, instilling in them a strong faith and selflessness. He was also a loving grandfather to Jeremiah, who brought him great joy and pride.
Gary attended Montclair State University where he majored in Physical Education. After college Gary worked as a machine operator for 25 years for Essex Paving Company, owned and operated by his mother and stepfather. Later, he worked for a greenhouse and after moving to southern New Jersey, he worked as a craftsman and repairman for an elderly community.
Gary was a gifted athlete who excelled in numerous sports throughout high school and college. He shared his lifelong passion for fishing with friends & family, and he enjoyed serving many loved ones through his carpentry skills. In recent years, he discovered the joys of travel and hiking with Nancy. Most important to Gary was his faith and belief in a loving God and the saving grace offered through Jesus Christ, which guided his actions and words. He and his wife Nancy were longtime members of the Manahawkin Baptist Church.
Although Gary is no longer with us, his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched. His unwavering commitment to his faith, family, and community served as a testament to others. He will be deeply missed by many, but his memory will continue to inspire us to live our lives with the same kindness, dedication, and love that he exemplified.
A celebration of life will take place on Saturday October 28, 2023 at 11am at Manahawkin Baptist Church 400 Beach Ave Stafford Twp. NJ.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Gary's honor to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation - Giving to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation – Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation
