Eugene C. Snedeker


 

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Eugene C. Snedeker (Peter) joined his wife of 62 years and soul mate, Margaret Alice (nee Biggs), in heaven 

December 10, 2011.  Predeceased by his parents, John Edward and Mary (nee Cleaver) Snedeker of Troy, PA and his brother, John Snedeker ofTrumansburg,NY.  His sense of adventure and humor is continued by his seven children, in the following birth order Cornelia (Bob) Whitefleet, Peter (Chris) Snedeker, Jack (Barbara) Snedeker, Katherine (Barsamian) Snedeker, Paul (Virginia) Snedeker, Anne (Mike) Guadalupe and Margaret Snedeker.  He is survived by his twin, William Henry (Bonnie) Snedeker, twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.  

His Military career included the following:  June 20th, 1944, he enlisted in the US Army during WWII and was assigned to an elite group that demonstrated the beginning concepts of “Rapid Insertion.”  He was deployed toJapan, paratrooping in known as “The Rakkasans”.  He married the love of his life, Margaret Alice Biggs in 1947.  With new military concepts being formed,Eugenewas transferred to instruct them inFortCampbell.  As a Korean Combat veteran, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Silver Star while serving in the 82nd Airborne, 25 Regiment ‘Wolf Hounds’ in Company H.  AtFortBenning,Eugenetrained troops in Combat Rapid Insertion techniques as well as the  new “recoilless  rifle.  After that he was assigned the JAG instructor at theUniversityofVirginiaduring which time he received his Bachelors Degree in Science and Education.  Then he was Post Commander inKasseland Germany G2 Intelligence followed by Professor of Military Science of Xavier High School, New York City.  He continued as an Inspector for Troop Assessment Readiness for The National Guard.   He was a stroke survivor for the last ten years of his life.  He was a communicant of the St. Mary’s of the Pines Catholic Church,Manahawkin,NJ.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the National Stroke Association, www.stroke.org.  Future services will be inTroyPAin June of 2012.  For more information www.legacy.com/EugeneCSnedeker.
